Summary:
Vinod Kumar Tailang of Bhopal has collected over 500 rare coins from India and 45 countries, showcasing centuries of history and economic evolution. His collection spans ancient, medieval, colonial, and modern eras, including rare Mauryan, Indo-Greek, British-era, and princely-state coins. A scholar of ancient history, Vinod has learned several Indian and foreign scripts to deepen his numismatic knowledge.Let us learn in detail about this amazing and valuable collection –
Coins are far more than metal tokens of exchange; they are miniature chronicles of civilizations. Preserving fragments of history, they tell stories of kings and kingdoms, economic transitions, cultural values, and technological progress. With this understanding, Bhopal’s Vinod Kumar Tailang began collecting coins thirty four years ago—a hobby that soon became a lifelong passion.
His journey started in 1991, when his father, K. K. Tailang, gifted him two British-era silver coins. That simple gesture sparked a fascination that has grown steadily, resulting in a personal treasure trove of nearly 500 coins. His collection represents ancient, medieval, and modern monetary history of India, while also showcasing the economic evolution of 45 nations across the world.
Among the gems of his collection are 5th-century tiny silver coins, Mauryan-period coins marked with a crescent over a mountain, Indo-Greek issues, and rare coins of the Yuezhi dynasty bearing Lord Shiva and his sacred bull, Nandi. Medieval treasures include coins of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, and Sher Shah Suri.
The colonial chapter of his collection is equally rich. It features silver and copper coins issued by the East India Company, and coins of British monarchs William IV, Edward VII, and George V. Original and imitation coins of Queen Victoria, holed coins, and those from princely states such as Jaipur, Gwalior, Indore, Ratlam, Hyderabad, and others reflect India’s diverse numismatic heritage.
